Thanksgiving

I just read an article in the New York Times about a group of people in the Ft. Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn who are starting an intentional community. They bought a building site, plans, etc and are building themselves an apartment building so that they can have a nice community to live in. The reason they say, that they are doing this is because they all live in neighborhoods where they have no relationships with any of their neighbors. They would like to live in a neighborhood where children play together, families and adults meet for dinners and otherwise, talk to eachother and hang out.

Besides Ganas (the local intentional community), Staten Islanders already have this. I think one of the best things about the North Shore is the sense of community we all share. I know practically everyone on my street. And we say hi to each other. And our kids play together. And we pick up each other's mail when we go out of town. And we even eat dinner together from time to time.

People like to dismiss Staten Island as inferior to other boroughs. But here, we don't have to invest millions of dollars to have communities. It just comes with the territory.
